Growing jobs and the local economy were high on the list of priorities during South Bend Mayor James Mueller’s State Of The City Address, on Tuesday, April 26.
The address took place at the St. Joseph County Public Library Auditorium.
The mayor says one goal the city has is returning staff to pre-pandemic levels. He also talked about growing neighborhoods on the city’s west side and East Bank and improving streets.
While overall optimistic about the city’s future, Mueller wants to prioritize gun violence moving forward.
“We are committed to delivering a safe community for everyone,” said Mueller during his address. “Everyone deserves to feel safe and be safe in their home, in their neighborhood, and across the city. Yet senseless gun violence tears this away from us.”
He says South Bend had 121 shooting victims last year and is worried about those numbers rising in 2022. According to WSBT, South Bend Police took more than 600 illegal firearms off the street last year.
Mueller believes state officials aren’t helping the issue after repealing the law requiring a concealed firearm permit. He says a permit less system may work for rural parts of Indiana, but not for cities like South Bend.

Growing economy, shrinking crime part of Mayor Mueller’s State Of The City Address. What city is he going to speak about?
Democrats lie, people die.
Maybe by “shrinking crime” he means the thugs are getting younger and younger? Or perhaps that they are using smaller calibers when they shoot each other?
Also, those 600 firearms were probably not illegal. It was the criminals’ possession of them that was illegal…
It’s pretty bad when you post this garbage and then three stories down….ON THE SAME PAGE !!!
South Bend Police: Tuesday morning shootings in South Bend were connected
Jon Zimney – April 27, 20220
The two shootings that happened on Tuesday, April 26, in South Bend are connected. That’s the word from the Violent Crimes Unit.
For a news outlet that “thinks” they are conservative… You have A LOT to learn…
“Everyone deserves to feel safe and be safe in their home, in their neighborhood, and across the city. Yet senseless gun violence tears this away from us.”
Ummm, guns aren’t violent…people are!
Guns don’t vote for Democrats, and Mueller knows that blaming the people who vote for him will cost him his job. Democrat voters don’t really do that whole “personal responsibility” thing.
Talk is cheap….
I could expound on the same issues, but what we need is action. Really what we need is a return to God and his commandments for living with each other.
