Traffic on South Beiger Street came to a halt after the driver of a car drove around the lowered gates at the railroad crossing and the vehicle was struck by an approaching Norfolk Southern train.

It happened early Thursday morning, April 28, at the crossing on Beiger south of East Fourth Street.

The driver suffered serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

Police believe alcohol is a factor.
