St. Joseph Co. residents surprised by swollen property taxes

The St. Joseph County property taxes are hitting homeowners in the wallet hard this year.

Some residents are seeing increases of 100% or more. WSBT says there is a two-fold reason why people are seeing such a spike in their taxes. First, the county did a study on land values this year. An analysis on the base rates hadn’t been performed since 2012. That, paired with the annual adjustment to the housing market is seeing jumps of 50%-100%.

Residents have until June 15 to file an appeal, and are recommended to do so sooner rather than later if they intend to.

When you can’t raise the tax rate, just arbitrarily overvalue the property to get the revenue you desire.

This is going to be devastating to our young homeowners as well as the retired/elderly who are already struggling to keep their homes!
Good way for them to get more of our $$. Let’s just inflate values! All about the money and be damned human life!!

I’m scared to death my property taxes are included in my house payment. My property went up $80,000 and I’m scared I won’t be able to afford my house payment. Could there be a lot of foreclosures in the future?
