Man who failed to show up for molestation trial convicted anyway

A man who failed to show up for his trial after being charged with four counts of child molesting was convicted in LaPorte County.

David Powers II was charged in 2020 with molestation.

He was released on bail and, though he showed up for a pre-trial conference earlier this month, prosecutors say he failed to show for the trial. But that didn’t stop the trial from taking place and, with just an opening and closing statement from his Powers’ attorney, the jury found him guilty.

A bench warrant with nationwide extradition was issued for the arrest of Powers.

Anybody with information concerning Powers’ whereabouts is asked to contact Sergeant Brett Swanson of the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team by calling or texting (219) 363-9623.
