Governor Holcomb has proclaimed June to be Immigrant Heritage Month.
The American Immigration Council says there are more than 678,000 immigrants in The Great Lakes State, representing about 7% of Michigan’s population.
M-Live reports most of those individuals immigrate from neighboring Canada, as well as Mexico, India, Iraq, and China. They also represented more than $18 billion in spending power in 2018. More than 40% have at least a college degree, and more than 4 out of 5 speak English well.
The state government says the way people treat immigrants is important, and encourage respect of all cultures and the important roles they play in society.
