Plainfield Walmart Distribution Warehouse fire reports made public

It has been three months since the Walmart Distribution Warehouse in Plainfield and the effects are still being felt, in the air.

The March 16th smoke that was seen for miles made it into the homes right around the corner. This is a problem because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency took air and soil samples 12 hours after the fire started and found some alarming results during their week-long samplings. Their reports were made public this week.

Because of the smoke, the Plainfield town government and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management advised people in the area to stay inside at the time, and that they did.

A nearby house had called a restoration company who had recommended a full remediation of the house, and a good thorough cleaning of the attic, walls and the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system. But, the homeowner’s insurance denied the claim on the basis that the house had no visible smoke damage.

According to the EPA report, dozens of compounds were released into the air by the fire. The main two contaminants were asbestos and benzene.
