Gas prices have been going down across Indiana and nationwide

Gas prices have been going down across Indiana and nationwide. That is a trend that could continue, but one oil and gas expert is urging you to be aware of a possible increase.
“The average gas price in Indianapolis is down about 38 cents per gallon from its peak on June 7th,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
DeHaan says trends are similar at gas stations throughout the rest of Indiana. Indiana’s gasoline use tax increased to 29.1 cents on July 1. That’s the highest Indiana’s gasoline use tax has been since the state began using a specific formula to determine the rate in 2014. The 5.1-cent increase also is the largest one-month jump since 1994, but DeHaan says it won’t affect you that much.
“It was basically gobbled up and offset by the declining price of fuel. Having said that, stations and consumers are both paying more at the pump as that gas tax has gone up. You just may not have noticed because prices have fallen so significantly. What it did do was take a bite out of the profits from gas stations,” said DeHaan.
Along with the price of fuel going down, fears of a recession from economists and those on Wall Street are also playing a role in the lower prices. Even with that, DeHaan says it wouldn’t be a bad idea to consider hedging your bets if you need to fill up.
“Maybe about Wednesday or Thursday, I’d be shopping around for those lower price stations. We could see a price cycle where those prices might go up, but that is certainly not guaranteed,” said DeHaan.
As of Tuesday, GasBuddy had the statewide average at $4.87 per gallon. That is down 14 cents from this time a week ago. It is $4.87 in Indianapolis, $4.79 in Fort Wayne, and $4.74 in Evansville.
