New Elkhart Schools substitute pay rate encourages retired teachers to return to the classroom
On August 9, the Elkhart Community Schools Board of School Trustees doubled the rate of pay for substitute teachers who are retired Indiana teachers.
Previously, the rate of pay for retired teachers who returned to the classroom as substitute teachers was $145 for a full day and $75 for a half day. Effective August 10, the new rate of pay for retired teachers who serve as substitute teachers is $300 for a full day and $150 for a half day.
Additionally, the district added an incentive for teachers who specifically retired from Elkhart Community Schools. The rate of pay for a substitute teacher who previously taught and retired from Elkhart Community Schools is $350 for a full day and $175 for a half day.
The substitute rate of pay for non-teachers has not changed. For individuals with a substitute permit only, the rate of pay is $100 for a full day and $55 for a half day. For individuals with a substitute permit and qualifications to write/grade lesson plans is $130 for a full day and $65 for a half day.
