Two people have been charged with the murder of an 18-year-old man who was shot and killed, earlier this summer, in Mishawaka.

Tychius Derrickson died outside of one of the Pin Oak Apartment Complex buildings in mid-June. Now, prosecutors have announced that Nashawn Stephens, 18, of South Bend and Kyndall Dickerson, 19, of Mishawaka have been arrested in connection with his death.

According to court documents, both Stephens and Derrickson were involved romantically with Dickerson. Dickerson spoke with Derrickson the day of his killing, then contacted Stephens afterward, telling him she’d leave a key under the mat for him. That evening, Stephens burst into her bedroom at the apartment, beat Derrickson, then dragged him outside and shot him to death in front of the building.

Dickerson first told police she didn’t know the attacker, but later admitted that she lied.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has reviewed the investigation and charged
Stephens with:
Count I: Murder
Count II: Firearm Enhancement

The Prosecutor’s Office charged Dickerson with:
Count I: Murder
Count II: Conspiracy to Commit Murder, a level 1 felony
Count III: Assisting a Criminal, a level 5 felony.

The sentencing range for Murder is 45 to 65 years. The sentencing range for a level 1
felony is 20 to 40 years. The sentencing range for a level 5 felony is one to six years. The
sentencing range for a firearm enhancement is five to 20 years.

Unfortunately these two individuals will be walking free in a few years. Sadly this is the way the court system works. There’s nothing wrong with locking up dangerous people for decades and decades.
