Crown Point man arrested after leaving scene of crash

A Crown Point man behind the wheel of a semi has been arrested for leaving the scene of a crash after narrowly missing a collision with a school bus, then allegedly hitting a NIPSCO wire.

It happened late last month in the area of the 9000 block of U.S. 30. in LaPorte County.

Sheriff’s investigators say South Central Community School Corporation bus was slowing, getting ready to make a turn, when the driver noticed a semi approaching, but not slowing down.

To avoid a collision, the bus driver aborted the turn. The semi passed the bus on the right, then went off the road, hitting the wire attached to the NIPSCO pole, which snapped in half.

A warrant was issued for the suspect driver, 56-year-old Chukudi Chinwah.

He turned himself in to police and has been released on bond.
