The latest Nuclear Regulatory Meeting regarding Palisades was held Thursday night.

It was made clear that the NRC meeting, regarding the decommissioning of the plant, would NOT address a possible reopening of Palisades. WSJM reports that Bruce Watson of the NRC said that his organization will ensure that the plant is decommissioned safely, and if approval comes for the plant to restart, they will make sure they meet the highest standards of safety to operate it.

The current plan has spent fuel going into dry cask storage in 2025, safe storage in 2026, and then a dormant period through 2035. Final decommissioning would happen in 2041.

Governor Whitmer has supported an application to keep the plant open.
