Snowy weather was a factor in a deadly crash in LaPorte County.

The collision happened around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, on Johnson Road at CR 500 West.

A gray 2009 Hyundai, driven by a 65-year-old Michigan City man, was traveling north on County Road 500 West. The driver disregarded the stop sign at the intersection and the vehicle collided with an eastbound vehicle.

The vehicle traveling eastbound on Johnson Road, a brown 2021 Jeep, was being driven by a 69-year-old man from LaPorte.

Joseph Childers, 45, of Michigan City, who was riding in the Jeep suffered an upper body injury. He was taken from the scene to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the Jeep complained of upper body pain. The man who went through the stop sign was not injured.

Sheriff’s investigators say snow squalls had been happening on and off throughout the afternoon. The driver of the Hyandai told deputies the wind was blowing and snow had reduced his visibility.
