Indiana Michigan Power will invest 62 million dollars into a new power substation and other improvements in Buchanan.

The utility announced the power grid updates just before Thanksgiving, and will build the Bucktown Substation just outside of downtown Buchanan.

To connect the new facility to the grid, I & M will also upgrade the transmission lines that lead to the Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Bridgman.

Increased power usage in Buchanan thanks to new businesses moving to town, including cannabis dispensaries, led to the decision to make the investment. Hundreds or even thousands of new poles will go up as part of the project, and construction should begin in 2026 with a targeted completion date of summer 2027.
