(Bill Beck/Elkhart Truth)

Two people are recovering from injuries after an apartment fire in Elkhart.

Crews were called just before 12 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5, to the 300 block of Chapman Avenue and spotted black smoke billowing into the sky while on their way.

At the scene, crews found heavy fire and smoke coming from the front and back of a two-floor apartment.

A man was found lying in the front yard with injuries after helping a woman, who jumped out of a second-floor window to escape the fire.

Five people, total, were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

So far, there is no word about the cause of the fire.
