How to prevent pipes from freezing

While you may now be celebrating the season and the shift to colder weather, your spirits might be dampened if your pipes freeze.

State Farm has some tips and tricks for you in regard to this unfortunate reality.

The insurance company suggests tricks like letting faucets drip overnight to keep water moving, opening cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes under sinks, disconnecting your garden hoses, and keeping your home warm in an effort to prevent frozen pipes. However, if you do experience frozen pipes, steps like leaving dry faucets turned on and calling a plumber, or shutting off the water supply can help you avoid bigger problems.

They say do not use an open flame to thaw your own frozen pipes.
