A 48-year-old Michigan City man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after his vehicle struck a semi.

The collision happened late Wednesday afternoon on U.S. 12 and resulted in the closure of the highway between Bakertown Road and Red Bud Trail.

Police say the man was traveling westbound when the semi turned into the path of his vehicle.

The victim’s car ended up crushed underneath the semi’s trailer.

The man was unconscious when first responder got him out of the vehicle.

It’s unknown if seatbelts were used or if alcohol/drugs were a factor, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Berrien County Sheriff deputies, Buchanan Police & Fire, Bertrand Township Fire Department, & SMCAS ambulance.
