A Van Buren County road worker died after being struck by a vehicle in a construction zone.

The collision happened on Friday, March 3, in a work zone on County Road 681, near 48th Avenue.

The driver of a 1997 Dodge pickup truck failed to follow traffic controls and hit the back of a stopped 2012 Chevy pickup truck after trying to pass it, according to Michigan State Police.

While trying to pass the Chevy, the Dodge also allegedly struck the road worker.

The worker, Rene Rangel, 58, of Dowagiac, was holding a traffic control signal when he was hit.
