Woman shot during struggle w/gun, suspect steals car, crashes

The Mishawaka Police Department Detective Bureau is investigating a shooting and motor vehicle theft.

The incident happened shortly before 12 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30, near the intersection of Lincoln Way and Main Street.

Investigators say a 55-year-old woman left the Phoenix Bar and Grill and got into her vehicle.

At the same time, a Hispanic male entered her vehicle.

The woman pulled a gun on the suspect and a struggle ensued over the weapon. One shot was fired. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to her hand. She got out of the vehicle and suspect got behind the wheel and took off.

The vehicle was recovered a short time later, after a crash in downtown South Bend and the suspect was taken into custody.

Lady’s, when getting in your cars at night, the first thing you do is press the lock button before you sit down.
If your car does not have auto-lock button, before you get out of the car lock all other doors first so they are locked later. Stay safe as much as possible. If going out at night for a drink, never go alone. Take a friend with you if you can, that also may help, and be mindful of anyone who follows you out.

Also, nothing good happens after midnight. Go home at a reasonable hour, don’t be the last one out the door.

How about reporting the legal status of the attacker?
