Details unveiled in 2021 Elkhart County shooting death case

Details about a shooting death in Goshen, nearly two years ago, were unveiled in the suspect’s initial court hearing this past week.
Sherman Whitener Jr., 23, is charged with murder for the July 2021 death of Deontae Harris.
Police were sent to the 600 block of West Cleveland Avenue, where police found Harris lying in the street with a gunshot wound.
Harris was taken to Elkhart General Hospital but died from the injuries.
Surveillance footage showed Whitener extend his arm toward a black Ford SUV. After the incident, Whitener fled while another man, Tyren Allen, approached Harris and took his keys, cell phone and a gun.
According to the Goshen News, Harris’ fiance told police all three men knew each other. Allen allegedly told her he was trying to diffuse a situation between Whitener and Harris before Harris was shot.
