Two South Bend women are interested in renovating a building in the downtown area.

Charity Stowe and Rachel Mospan want to renovate the building on 516 S. Michigan Street into commercial space and apartment units. It’s near the new gas station at the intersection of Monroe and Michigan.

The South Bend Common Council approved a tax abatement resolution for the renovations.

Some Common Council members say that the project is a win-win. Others worry about the impacts for the homeless in the area.

Final approval will happen at a later date and renovations could cost over $500,000.

Developers say it would be funded through private investment and a city grant.
