Speeders are being watched in Michigan.
Police say that they are upping their speed enforcement measures from Saturday June 17, through Sunday, June 25. They’ll be watching all Michigan roads throughout the campaign.
This, after a rise in speed-related deaths, with 237 deaths on Michigan roads in 2021, up 18.5% from 2020, when 200 people died.
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says that the goal of the enforcement is to change driving behaviors and save lives.
Michigan State Police say that speeding accounts for one-fourth of all traffic deaths nationally.
In Michigan, the number of traffic crashes rose from 245,432 in 2020 to 282,640 in 2021, an increase of 15 percent.
Insurance industry studies show that around 112,000 speeding tickets are issued every day, that’s around 41 million per year.

The purpose is to generate more revenue for the state. There a legion of laws that were written to make driving safer that go unenforced every day; but speeding is easy to identify and profitable for the state.
Spot on, this isn’t about safety it’s about revenue.
Not to mention the amount of Police that do some serious speeding past my house, which is across the street from a children’s park.
It always boils my blood when I see the amount of people that get pulled over in the same area but police continue to go unchecked. Like, I should be happy they are stopping speeders but it seems like the police themselves have no responsibility or repercussions for their actions.
End qualified immunity.
The only time any emergence vehicle can speed is in an emergency situation with lights on. Otherwise the individuals breaking the law can be reported and that person can be reprimanded just like us commoners can.

How about people running red lights? That’s a huge problem, but nothing is done about it. I agree that this is just a way to generate revenue. If they really wanted to put a stop to speeding, they would do this enforcement for longer than a week.

Who are they kidding? This is not about public safety, Why only June 17th—25th? Is that how long they get to spend the grant money? I find it hard to believe they care about safety more then the money that will be generated. Changing driving behavior, and save life’s! I call B.S. if they wanted to slow drivers down, why are they hiding behind bridges, curves, and road signs? Seems to me they want to encourage speeding. We’ll never know how many lives are saved because they show up afterwards.
REALLY, Cause as soon as I see a State Trooper, Sherriff,Police Officer I personally don’t change my driving speed. If I’m speeding I’m not going to automatically decrease my speed because there behind me. I call it automatically something to hide. I know the Troopers trape spots, there NOT hiding they have a job to do. Everyone’s accountable for there own actions, The same old he said she said!

Of course these things went up in 2021 compared to 2020. Nobody was driving as businesses were shut down and people were working remotely. I can’t believe the reporter is so poor at their job that they don’t point that out in the article.
I think it’s a crock of sh*t as well,everything is about the once all mighty dollar if more people are speeding it’s because they have to make it on time to their 2nd and 3rd job that they need to keep their head above water due to lunch bucket Joe turning the country into a dung pile.
An increase of 15% from 2020 where there were mass lockdowns and travel restrictions to 2021 seems like a success. That said, I regularly witness very aggressive drivers along m59 between Pontiac and Utica and along US 23 between Brighton and Ann Arbor. There is rarely any traffic enforcement occurring.

It’s no wonder so many cyclists get injured or killed. Many of them speed daily. Also they very often have loud mufflers, which are not enforced.
Not enough is being done on speeding, or traffic violations. People want everything their way and ignore the speed limits, passing on double lines, on hills and rolling through Stop signs. It’ll take more than a week. For those who claim it’s about revenue obviously don’t give a rats ass about anybody, but themselves and to hell with responsible drivers who operate their vehicle without endangering innocent lives.

About time! Should be every day. For some reason people think the left lane speed limit is above the speed limit. Traveling at the speed limit or just above in the right lane you will be passed in the left lane by others traveling far over the posted limit. It was a mistake to raise the speed limit as people just push it even more. Then jogging between lanes, tailgating and not allowing enough room between vehicles. Faster equals less response time when something to avoid happens.

Michigan is the worst state when it comes to patrolling roads. I can drive from Jackson, all the way to Mackinaw City and I might see one police officer. If I was in Ohio going from Toledo to Cincinnati. I will see the state highway patrol every 20 miles. This is why in Michigan people drive 90 to 100 mph. There are no consequences here.
It’s about time law enforcement stepped up and regulated traffic speed.

Could it possibly be that as unfortunate as it is, those traffic deaths could have been avoided if the Roads Were FIXED. People dodging massive Damage causing Potholes that swallow whole tires.

Let’s double the amount of semi-trucks on the road, double the federal weight limit, have whoever drive it and then blame speeders for the high crash rates. Brilliant, I’m glad our government looks out for us.
