A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train.
It happened around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, near the crossing at 6th and Russell Streets.
The crossing at Russell Avenue was blocked for a period of time due to the investigation.
There was no immediate word about the circumstances that led to the pedestrian being hit by the locomotive.
The Mishawaka Police Department released the following statement:
Officers with the Mishawaka Police Department responded to the report of a possible accident involving a pedestrian and a passing train in the area of Russell and 6th St.
The Amtrak crew from the involved train stopped and contacted arriving officers.
Officers discovered a deceased party near the tracks who had appeared to have been struck and all railroad traffic was stopped for the investigation.
A joint investigation is being conducted with Federal Railroad Police and currently the identity of the deceased is not being released pending next of kin notification.
Railroad traffic has resumed in the area.
