Residents in Whiting say the could smell an unfamiliar odor not far from the BP refinery there.
The refinery saying that severe weather moving through the northern part of the state caused a “disruption” at the refinery which triggered an an unplanned flaring of gases from the facility.
BP says they are managing it and that there is no threat to the community nearby.
County leaders are urging residents not to call 911 over the smell, which also spread through Porter, LaPorte and Berrien Counties.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management plans to conduct a follow-up evaluation once the problem is dealt with.
