The City of Benton Harbor will enter into a consent agreement to improve its sanitary sewer system.

Commissioners heard from consultants this week as the city is looking for $20 million in sewer work over the next few years to get in compliance with EGLE rules.

The consent agreement with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy would put the city in a better position to be approved for loans or grants from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.

According to WSJM, commissioners were told that the city’s best chances for securing state money would be to sign the consent agreement by the end of the week.

They say the commissioners are hoping for funds in the form of grants rather than loans.
