Traffic may become jammed on a stretch of Capital Avenue starting next week as crews will start construction of a sidewalk within the southwest quadrant of Lincoln Way East and Capitol Avenue (S.R. 331) which will eventually connect between Jefferson Blvd. to Lincoln Way East. During the course of this project there will be times of significant delays to westbound traffic as traffic will be funneled into one single lane.
Crews are tentatively scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 14, at which time westbound traffic will be transitioned to the northernmost lane while crews remove the center concrete median curb.
Once the center curb is removed and temporary asphalt placed, traffic will then be shifted to the south dropping the northernmost lane and beginning east of Capital/LWE intersection. There crews will begin removing pavement and concrete curbing and vegetation I to increase the area intended for the concrete sidewalk. The sidewalk will match in to the existing sidewalk at 5’ width and widen to 8’ once it resumes on the east edge of Riviera Drive towards Capitol Ave.
Once the project has been completed, traffic will remain in this configuration permanently, shortening the transition from 2 westbound lanes to one by approximately 750’.
