IREAD-3 results say third grade Hoosiers are struggling to read, but some area schools are showing major progress.

Results show one in five third graders struggle to read, with a proficiency rate of 81.9%.

The number showed a slight increase from 2022’s results, but is still significantly lower than the 2012-2013 school year which showed a rate of 91.4%.

According to WSBT, schools such as John Glenn and Union-North United School Corporation saw increases, while South Bend and Goshen schools remained about the same as last year.

Others, including Fairfield and Concord schools, saw a decrease.

Overall, School City Mishawaka increased reading proficiency by about 3%, with its highest gain at Battell Elementary School.
