The man who who prosecutors say opened fire at an Indiana State Police Excise Officer has been found guilty of attempted murder.
It was back in September 2022 when prosecutors say Ian Austin shot at Excise Officer Joseph Formato who was on duty in his police vehicle in the area of Rockne Drive and Jacob Street in South Bend.
According to court documents, Formato had stopped Austin for an alleged traffic violation. Austin got out of his vehicle and began shooting.
Austin’s guilty verdict was handed down by the judge during a bench trial earlier this month. He could be sentenced to as many as 60 years in prison.
The date of his sentencing hearing has not yet been set.
