Michigan lawmakers voted to end most juvenile court fees.

It was part of a larger overhaul of the state’s juvenile justice system, according to Bridge Michigan.

Some counties in the state leave families in debt after passing them the costs of juvenile detentions.

Final approval for a series of bills was given Wednesday evening, including legislation that would eliminate most court fees levied on families of youth.

It would keep mandatory crime victim payments and restitution but would eliminate most other fines and costs.

The legislation is now headed to Governor Whitmer.
