South Bend man charged in connection with May shooting death near Madison, Taylor Streets

A South Bend man, Adonis Hawkins, has been charged with murder in connection with a May 2023 shooting near Madison and Taylor streets, resulting in the death of Lecarrington Underwood, 37.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges in August, and Hawkins, 32, was recently arrested out of state. He has been returned to Indiana, where he is now in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.

The investigation revealed that Underwood and Hawkins were acquaintances, with Underwood frequently visiting Hawkins at his residence on West. Madison.

On May 3, Underwood walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his back, stating that the incident occurred near the intersection of Madison and Taylor streets in South Bend. Despite efforts, Underwood died.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and saw a person matching Hawkins’ description in the area. Hawkins’ phone data further confirmed his presence during the shooting. Another witness stated that Hawkins admitted to shooting Underwood in the back during a dispute near his home Notably, at the time of Hawkins’ admission, the police had not disclosed the specific location on Underwood’s body where he was shot.
