There is ongoing debate concerning the proposed establishment of a low-barrier homeless intake center in South Bend, located near the airport on Bendix Drive.

On January 22, the South Bend School Corporation approved the purchase of a 5-acre plot of land on Bendix Drive. However, on January 25, the South Bend Redevelopment Commission tabled the purchase proposal.

This proposal was met with some resistance from the community, as was evident during a news conference held by city leaders on January 25. A County Council-led news conference was held on Jan. 30. Around 200 people attended a public meeting to voicer concerns and ask questions on Thursday, be the meeting was cut short when the number of people exceeded capacity limits.

Another meeting is now set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at LaSalle Academy. Mayor James Mueller, city leadership, and partners will be on hand. Presentations will be displayed at this event.

Attendees should enter through Door 2 to enter the building for the meeting.

Too many people showed up who disagreed so they shut it down and rescheduled.

This should be a mental institution not a “homeless” shelter.
