A suspect has been arrested on several preliminary charges after a pursuit on South Bend’s south side.

It was around 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, when a South Bend Police Officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation at Michigan Street and Fairview Avenue.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver fled the traffic stop, leading to a pursuit. The pursuit was then called off in the area of Main Street and Ireland Road due to increased speeds.

A short time later, another officer observed the suspect vehicle disregarding the stop light at Ireland Road and Fellows Street. He attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled, restarting a pursuit.

The suspect ultimately lost control of the vehicle and struck a residence in the 4000 block of Addison Street. The suspect then exited the driver’s seat and fled on foot behind several houses.

There were no injuries as a result of the crash.

Responding officers were then advised that the suspect may be hiding in a shed in the 4000 block of S. Michigan Street. An officer located the suspect lying down in the shed, covered up by a cardboard box, then took the suspect into custody.

Suspected marijuana and paraphernalia were located in the suspect vehicle.

The suspect, 27-year-old Chad Heflin of Plymouth, was arrested and ultimately transported to the St. Joseph County Jail on several preliminary charges related to the pursuit and the suspected drugs located in the vehicle. Heflin was also arrested on multiple unrelated warrants.
