South Bend man found shot to death in vehicle identified

The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a homicide on the city’s northwest side.

On Thursday, Feb. 1, around 8 a.m., South Bend Police responded to the area of Brookfield Street and Fassnacht Avenue on the report of an unresponsive person in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers located James Stewart, 23, of South Bend, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Stewart was pronounced deceased at the scene.

His autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Kalamazoo.

This is an active investigation and involves a review of the case facts and evidence, including pinpointing where the shooting may have occurred.
