The officers involved in a shooting in December of last year will not be charged, according to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office.

Investigators say Johnny Wood, 54, of Elkhart was shot and killed by officers on Dec. 24. 2023.

Police say they were responding to a shots-fired call in the 200 block of South Dixie Way in Roseland just after 5 a.m. when a St. Joseph County Deputy spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redmon issued the following statement:

“I want to thank the Indiana State Police and the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office for their diligent and detailed work on the investigation of the December 24th chase and shooting involving County Officer Sgt. Joseph Querciagrossa and Mishawaka Police Officer Anthony Stachowiak.

Sgt. Querciagrossa and Officer Stachowiak were forced to make a split-second decision when the suspect pointed a handgun at the officers when they ordered him out of the irrigation ditch he had concealed himself in. My administration and I commend the officers and support their actions in the early hours of that day.”
