Michigan leads the nation in a rather smelly statistic

The Cookie Monster made headlines this week, but here’s a story Oscar the Grouch would appreciate.

Michigan might be a great vacation destination for the trash-loving monster. The state is #1 in the country in terms of the number of landfills per resident.

Bridge Michigan reports that Governor Whitmer is calling for a steep increase in dumping fees in the state in an effort to fight back against landfill waste growth. Her plan would raise the per-ton fee from the current 36 cents to $5, saying it would bring the state in-line with regional averages and discourage neighboring states from treating Michigan like a dumping ground.

Michigan landfills had more than 685 tons of “waste in place” as of 2021.

Blame Debbie Stabenow for allowing Canada to import their trash to Michigan years ago. Our politicians sold out the natural beauty of our state in the name of profits.
