Below is the news release from Elkhart Police:

The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating a multi-vehicle crash involving six vehicles that occurred earlier this afternoon at the intersection of E. Bristol St and Osolo Rd.

At about 12:10 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of an accident with injuries at the intersection of E. Bristol St and Osolo Rd. Elkhart Police Departments and Elkhart Police Department Fire medics dispatched and arrived shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, officers observed a GMC Acadia against a pole on the northwest side of the intersection. The adult male driver (and sole occupant of the vehicle) was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire department personnel. He was transported by medics to Memorial Hospital for treatment of a serious head laceration and other injuries. His injuries were initially believed to be non-life threatening, but are now potentially life-threatening.

Initial investigation indicates that the GMC Acadia struck two vehicles (a Honda Accord and a Chrysler Pacific). This allegedly pushed the Honda Accord into two other vehicles. After this initial crash, the Acadia struck a Ford F-250 pickup. The Ford F-250 then spun out and came to rest on the opposite side of the intersection.

No other serious injuries were reported. The Elkhart Crash Reconstruction Team was activated, per protocol, and is handling the investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call the Elkhart Police Department at 574-295-7070.
