The Angela Boulevard Improvement Project, which includes a number of enhancements to calm traffic and improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety, is set to begin Monday, April 15. The project is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting.
The project begins on Angela Boulevard at Michigan Street and continues to Leahy Drive with most of the changes occurring between Notre Dame Avenue and Leahy Drive. This section includes the addition of a new traffic signal at Joyce Drive and the installation of bumpouts at three intersections: Eddy Street, Joyce Drive and Leahy Drive. New on-street parking, trees and landscaping will also be added. Work on Angela Boulevard between Michigan Street and Notre Dame Avenue includes constructing a new multipurpose path to the north side of the street from Pokagon Street west to Michigan Street. Once completed, this entire section of Angela Boulevard will be restriped to two travel lanes and a continuous center left turn lane.
Angela Boulevard will remain open to traffic during construction with limited lane restrictions. Work will temporarily be halted during special events at Notre Dame such as Commencement. Access to all businesses in the impacted areas will be maintained during construction.
CONSTRUCTION WILL OCCUR IN TWO PHASES:
Phase 1 (April 15 through mid-May weather permitting)
Construction of multipurpose path on the north side of Angela from Michigan to meet up with the existing sidewalk between Stanfield and Pokagon streets.
Phase 2 (Mid-May to mid-July, weather permitting)
Construction will move to Angela Boulevard from Notre Dame Avenue to Leahy Drive. Work includes new bumpouts at the Joyce and Leahy drives, and Eddy Street intersections, and a new traffic signal at the Angela Boulevard and Joyce Drive intersection. Paving and restriping of Angela Boulevard from Michigan Street to Leahy Drive will occur near the completion of this phase.
