Michigan lawmakers may soon require high schools to teach computer science.

The schools would be required to offer a computer science course, but students would not be required to take the course to graduate.

That’s according to Bridge Michigan who says the bill debated on Tuesday appears to have bipartisan support.

Currently, only 55 percent of Michigan high schools offer computer science, which falls below the national average.

The bill would require high schools to begin the courses by 2027, and it says they would need to make a good effort to offer the course in-person, though they could offer a virtual course if needed.
