Bomb squad called to scrap metal facility on report of suspected pipe bomb

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)

On Friday, May 24, around 2 p.m., South Bend Police were called to a scrap metal processing facility in the 1300 block of Prairie Avenue on the report of a suspicious device.

The South Bend Police Department’s Bomb Squad and 2nd Detail Patrol Officers responded and met with employees, who explained they located what they believed to be a pipe bomb amongst a load of scrap metal on the property.

Through an investigation by the Bomb Squad, officers determined the item was not a live device.

Despite the false alarm, the department says that if you ever come across an item or device that you suspect may be dangerous or an explosive, you should call 9-1-1.
