A crash sent a Mishawaka police officer to the hospital. The accident occurred just before 10 p.m. near the busy intersection of Grape and McKinley Roads.

Mishawaka Police released the following information about the crash:

Last night (05/27/2024) Mishawaka Police Department member Patrol First Class Maria Duncan conducted a traffic stop. This was in the 3600 block of Grape Road and began at 2139 hrs (9:39 p.m.). The reason for the stop was an improper license plate on a pickup truck. During the traffic stop it was determined that the driver gave PFC Duncan two false names and dates of birth. Shortly after giving the second false name, the driver took off, heading south on Grape Road and a vehicle pursuit began. PFC Duncan did have the emergency lights and siren on her patrol vehicle in operation.

The pursuit continued southbound on Grape Road. The driver of the truck ran the red light at the intersection of Grape and McKinley. When PFC Duncan entered the intersection, she was struck on the passenger side of her patrol vehicle. The suspect was able to elude the police. PFC Duncan was transported to a local hospital, treated for injuries and released. The other driver involved in the crash was not injured.

A short while ago, Mishawaka Police detectives located the truck involved and it has been impounded.
