Deadly crash caused after man falls asleep at wheel

A man who police say fell asleep at the wheel caused a deadly crash in LaGrange County.
It happened just before 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, when the 74-year-old man, who was traveling south on State Road 5 in Topeka, crossed the center line, and collided with an oncoming vehicle.
Despite attempts to avoid the collision, the oncoming car was struck on the front right side. It had two passengers. One was hospitalized with multiple injuries, while the other, 53-year-old Abel Salazar, was trapped and later died at the scene despite rescue efforts.
Both drivers were unharmed.
