New tax exemption seeks to turn former Rite Aid into car wash in Benton Township

(953 MNC)

The Benton Township Board of Trustees have updated a tax break for a new car wash to be built at the former Rite Aid at Napier and M-139.

In May the board granted a 12-year Commercial Facilities Tax Exemption for Tommy’s Express Car Wash, but WSJM reports that there was a slight hiccup in the plan at the state level on Tuesday. Only cities and villages, not Townships, can grant those exceptions.

Now, a revised Commercial Rehabilitation Tax Exemption has been approved and submitted instead, since the standing facility would need to be demolished for the new business. That process should begin in October.
