Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a rollover crash with injuries on Barron Lake Road near White Street in Howard Township

The collision happened around 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sep. 5.

The initial investigation revealed that a 44-year-old Elkhart man was driving northbound on Barron Lake Road when he reached down to pick up a pack of cigarettes in his car.

Upon looking up, the driver realized he was in the wrong lane. He attempted to correct his course but overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times.

The driver was transported to a South Bend hospital by ambulance for treatment of his injuries.

Authorities reported that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been factors in the accident, and the Elkhart man was not wearing a seatbelt.
