Wednesday is National Utility Scam Awareness Day

In anticipation of National Utility Scam Awareness Day on Wednesday, Nov. 20, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is urging you to avoid scams, especially in the form of actors appearing on your doorstep.

While some scams are still attempted through phone calls or online accounts, I&M’s Stephanny Smith says, “Some [scammers] ask to inspect equipment inside or near homes, while others threaten disconnection and ask for immediate payment.”

Smith notes that true I&M employees should rarely, if ever, need to enter your home. They also should not appear without an appointment, nor should they ask for any financial information at your front door.

So, if someone visits and claims to be with I&M, you are urged to:

Ask for their professional ID

Look for the company’s logo on their cars/clothes

Call I&M to verify that the person is an actual representative of the utility company.

You can reach the I&M Customers Operations Center by calling 1-800-311-4634. You can also access your account online, and manage payment information, at indianamichiganpower.com/account/.
