A routine traffic stop escalated into a high-speed pursuit and eventual arrest on December 13 when a LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over an SUV traveling eastbound on US 20 near Springville Road.
The deputy, who noticed the vehicle was speeding and the driver was not buckled up, initiated a traffic stop near Fail Road. Instead of complying, the driver made a U-turn across all lanes and fled, prompting a motor vehicle pursuit along US 20 and onto eastbound I-94.
Authorities decided to terminate the chase several miles later, but, a few minutes later, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies spotted the same SUV heading westbound on I-94 near the Indiana-Michigan state line, and initiated a second pursuit. The chase ended near the 39-mile marker when the SUV collided into the back of a semi.
The driver, identified as Maurice Williams, 29, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, fled on foot into a wooded area. He was apprehended shortly afterward by a deputy with help from a K-9 unit.
Williams was transported to the LaPorte County Jail, where he remains in custody on multiple charges, including:
Dealing in Cocaine
Dealing in Methamphetamine
Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon
Resisting Law Enforcement
Williams is also wanted on multiple outstanding warrants in Wisconsin.
