If you are looking for a last-minute Christmas gift, you may consider buying a gift card. If so, Kroger recently announced that it is working to “enhance security” for gift card shoppers.

In a press release, the company explained that it deals with “thousands of gift card transactions every day,” and rarely experiences problems. But, fraud is still a concern when dealing with plastic payment.

So, as part of a “layered fraud deterrent strategy,” Kroger stores will be installing locking pegs on gift card racks, monitoring gift card activity, and more. Locking pegs basically allow you to get gift cards off of racks, but do not make it possible to put them back.

Eric Halvorson, Manager of Corporate Affairs for the Kroger Central Division, notes that other measures will be taken, but will be less “visible” to shoppers, as they will occur more “behind the scenes.”
