3 killed, 2 officers injured in shooting at Martin’s Super Market at E. Jackson Blvd. in Elkhart

(Tommie Lee/MNC)

Three people are dead and two Elkhart Police officers were shot at the Martin’s Super Market on East Jackson Boulevard in Elkhart.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27.

Upon arrival, officers and first responders were directed to two shooting victims inside the store. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Officers engaged the shooting suspect in the parking lot, outside the store. During that engagement, two officers sustained gunshot wounds, and the alleged shooting suspect was shot and killed.

The officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.  One officer was treated and released and the second officer remains at the hospital in fair but stable condition.

There is no official word, yet, about what led up to this shooting or the identities of the two other victims.

The shooting happened near the check-out aisles, according to witnesses. Officers then engaged the suspect in gunfire in the parking lot outside of the store.

The Elkhart Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation.

The Homicide Unit is actively interviewing potential witnesses and is asking anyone with further information to contact the Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825. All further inquiries regarding the status of the investigation should be also be directed to the Homicide Unit.

Statement from Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese:

“In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens.  This pain is especially felt by the victim’s families, the responding officers, the families of the wounded officers, and all the witnesses to this tragic incident. I want to thank our local law enforcement partners, including the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police, for their support and assistance during this time.  I ask for the community to continue to keep all those effected by this horrific event in your thoughts and prayers.”

Statement from Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson:

“Our hearts are broken in Elkhart tonight. Please continue to pray for the victims including our two police officers who were wounded, our heroic first responders, and those at the incident. There is no immediate danger to the public. If there were any witnesses or if you have information, please contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.”

I have questions. Were the three eventually killed (DRT-dead right there) just innocent bystanders? OR were they criminals that settled their dispute in the store endangering all the innocent bystanders? What were the race of those killed? What is the immigration status of those killed? We haven;t been told the genders of those DRT. OF course, since there are over 50 of those and they are dead only the two original genders can be determined.

“What is the immigration status of those killed?”

The shooter was named Sanchez. I think your question is relevant in light of the national discussion right now.
