A new study has been released that ranks all 50 states on the number of debt collection accounts focused on its consumers.

The report from consumer group Wallethub examines collection accounts created when debts have gone unpaid and the original creditor sells that debt to a collector. These accounts do heavy damage to the consumer’s credit score, and they remain on their credit reports for seven years.

The study placed Michigan in the bottom ten of states with the problems, finishing 41st and suggesting the state is doing a good job paying its debts.

Wyoming ad the biggest problem, topping the list with an average of four collection accounts per consumer. Mississippi finished 50th.

Indiana was in the middle of the list, at 25th.
