Distressed dog’s owner now in custody

You may remember the recent rescue of a “distressed” dog that had been seen in a Facebook post. Now, police have taken its owner into custody.
State Police said Friday morning that 37-year-old Erik McClinton was wanted on a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to an animal. He was asked to turn himself in to the Lake County Jail, and is now in custody.
Earlier this week, a Facebook post seemed to show a Cane Corso or Mastiff breed riding in an unsecured kennel on an open trailer. Police soon found the dog – now identified as Midnight – in Gary, Indiana.
Midnight was taken to the Hobart Humane Society before being moved to the Gary Animal Control Facility. He is currently receiving care in a foster home.
According to ISP, multiple people have already inquired about adopting Midnight! But, officers say he needs “some time” to heal and for the court to make a decision about his owner.
They have also cautioned Hoosiers against “making false accusations, threats, and any other types of harassment,” after an “innocent person” was “FALSELY ACCUSED on social media of being involved.”
