Berrien County Commissioners are looking at ways to better protect the shoreline around the city of St. Joseph.

Last week the County Board heard details about a study that was conducted to consider strategies for maintaining the beaches and protecting the shoreline.

WSJM reports that dredging sand that moves naturally out in the lake is usually used to replenish the beaches, but the sand distribution is uneven when left to the natural process, with the north pier beach being bigger than what you see on Silver Beach, and Lions Park Beach needing even more attention.

A large investment would be necessary to find the best way to improve the shoreline’s health, and the plan is under advisement.
