Coast Guard: “Stay off the ice”

a body of water that has some ice on it

The Coast Guard is warning people to “exercise caution” around the icy waters on the Great Lakes.

Temperatures continue to fluctuate around the region, which results in unpredictable ice thickness. Those who are looking to do some ice fishing or enjoy other recreational activities around the lakes are reminded that even with cold temperatures, thin ice can happen.

Water temperatures are still dangerously cold, no matter what the air temperature is, and the ice near shorelines is almost always unstable thanks to shifting, expanding, and other factors.

Always dress for the water temperature, including a life-jacket, wear bright colors, and never go out on the ice alone. You should also consider carrying a registered locator beacon and a marine radio.
